Our AICAR 50mg vial holds 50mg of lyophilized AICAR, an AMPK activator. It’s for in-vitro and lab research only.
What is AICAR?
AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside) is a small molecule, not a peptide. Cells turn it into ZMP, which looks enough like AMP to switch on AMPK, the enzyme that senses when a cell is low on energy.
It was first tested in the 1980s and 1990s, under the name acadesine, as a way to protect heart muscle during bypass surgery. It never got approval for that, and it’s on the WADA prohibited list.
How AICAR acts in the lab
Inside the cell, adenosine kinase adds a phosphate to AICAR to make ZMP. ZMP binds the same site on AMPK that AMP does, so the enzyme acts as if the cell were running short of fuel.
Active AMPK turns on glucose uptake and fat burning and turns off fat and protein synthesis. ZMP also affects other AMP-sensitive enzymes, so not every effect of AICAR runs through AMPK, which matters when you design controls.

Published AICAR studies
The best-known AICAR paper is Narkar and colleagues in Cell (2008). Sedentary mice given AICAR for four weeks ran about 44% further on a treadmill, and their muscle showed genes switched on that endurance training normally switches on.
Earlier work used AICAR to show that AMPK activation raises glucose uptake into muscle without insulin, which made it a standard tool in diabetes and exercise biology labs.
The primary literature is on PubMed, run by the US National Library of Medicine. Here’s a search for AICAR studies to start from.
AICAR 50mg quality and handling
The vial label shows the compound and the amount. For anything your lab needs on file beyond that, email Peptira support with the product name before you place the order.
Many labs run their own identity check when a new batch arrives. For peptides, purity is usually measured by HPLC, which separates a sample into its parts and reports the main compound as a share of the total. Mass spectrometry is often run alongside it to confirm the molecular weight.
If you run a long study, try to order everything you need at once and log it when it arrives. It removes one variable from your results.
Reconstituting AICAR 50mg
The amount of liquid you add sets the concentration. For a vial holding 50mg:
- 2mL of bacteriostatic water gives 25mg/mL
- 3mL of bacteriostatic water gives 16.67mg/mL
- 5mL of bacteriostatic water gives 10mg/mL
Go with whichever number is easiest to work with in your protocol, and label the vial with the concentration and the date you mixed it.
Most labs use sterile bacteriostatic water. We stock bacteriostatic water in 3mL, 10mL and 30mL sizes. Warm the sealed vial to room temperature, add the water slowly along the glass wall and swirl gently until it’s clear. Never shake it.
How to store AICAR 50mg
Store sealed vials of AICAR 50mg in the freezer at -20°C, out of direct light. Mixed solution goes in the fridge at 2 to 8°C and should be used within about 28 days.
Running several vials at once? Our 10 vial kit case holds up to ten vials upright in separate wells under a clear lid, which keeps a fridge shelf tidy and the labels easy to read.
Planning a study with AICAR 50mg
Start from the protocol. Total the amount every arm needs from the first time point to the last, divide by the 50mg in a vial and add a spare. It’s cheaper to order once than to wait on a second shipment halfway through.
Mix one vial at a time and keep the rest sealed in the freezer. Dry powder keeps far longer than solution, so there’s no reason to reconstitute everything at the start.
Keep vials from one batch together in a study where you can. The batch number on the label ties each result back to the lab paperwork.
