Thymalin at a glance

Thymalin is a mix of short peptides extracted from calf thymus. Vladimir Khavinson and Vyacheslav Morozov developed it in Leningrad in the 1970s, and it has been registered in Russia as an immune medicine since the 1980s.

It isn’t a single molecule, so it has no single sequence or formula. Later work by Khavinson’s group identified short active fragments in it, including the dipeptide Glu-Trp. It isn’t approved in the US or Europe.

Thymalin mechanism of action

Thymalin is thought to act like the thymus’s own signals, helping immature T cells mature and restoring the ratio of helper to suppressor T cells in models where it’s off balance.

Khavinson’s theory is that short peptides like those in thymalin bind DNA in gene promoter regions and switch on genes in the tissue they came from. That idea is still debated.

Published Thymalin studies

Most of the published work comes from Khavinson’s group at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. A long follow-up study of older adults, published in Neuroendocrinology Letters in 2003, reported lower mortality over six to eight years in people who received thymalin and epithalamin courses.

Animal and cell studies have looked at T cell counts, the balance of T cell subsets and markers of immune aging. Independent replication outside Russia is limited, which is worth knowing before you build a study around it.

How Thymalin compares

Here’s how Thymalin 10mg fits among related compounds. Thymalin is a calf-thymus peptide complex from Khavinson’s program, registered in Russia as an immune medicine. By comparison:

  • Thymosin Alpha-1 is a 28-amino-acid thymic peptide, approved in several countries as thymalfasin
  • LL-37 is the only human cathelicidin, an antimicrobial peptide that also signals in wound repair
  • VIP is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide that relaxes smooth muscle and calms immune cells

These are all studied in immune research, but at different points: the thymus peptides on T-cell maturation and signaling, LL-37 on direct antimicrobial action and VIP on calming inflammation. See them all on our immune peptides page.

Thymalin 10mg reconstitution and concentration

The amount of liquid you add sets the concentration. For a vial holding 10mg:

  • 1mL of bacteriostatic water gives 10mg/mL
  • 2mL of bacteriostatic water gives 5mg/mL
  • 3mL of bacteriostatic water gives 3.33mg/mL

Choose the volume that suits your measurements. Mark the vial with the concentration and date so nobody has to guess later.

Use sterile bacteriostatic water, like our bacteriostatic water. Let the vial reach room temperature, run the water slowly down the inside of the glass, then roll the vial gently until the powder dissolves. Don’t shake it. Shaking can shear peptide chains.

How to store Thymalin 10mg

Freeze-dried Thymalin 10mg handles room temperature fine during shipping, but for anything longer keep it in a freezer at -20°C, away from light. Once mixed, keep it in the fridge at 2 to 8°C and use it within about four weeks.

Let a frozen vial warm up to room temperature before you open it. Cold glass pulls moisture out of the air, and moisture is what degrades dry peptide.

Thymalin 10mg quality notes

Peptira labels each Thymalin 10mg vial with the compound and the amount. Labs that file batch documentation should ask our support team about the current batch before ordering.

Labs that check material in-house normally confirm identity with mass spectrometry, which checks the molecular weight, and measure purity with HPLC, which separates the main compound from anything else in the sample.

Write the order date and the vial details into your lab notes. If a result looks odd later, you can tie it back to the exact material you used.
